There is a huge amount of misinformation, confusion, and opinion,
about who and what the 'human spirit' is (also known as 'spirit', 'being', or 'soul'); and how the first man came about.
Before God created human bodies He created a whole environment to put His special man and woman into.
It was on the 6th day, after God had created the environment, that God created the body for Adam and then later on, for Eve.

THE BEGINNING: The first seven days of God's creation:
The 1st day heavens, waters, day, and night created (Genesis 1:1-5)
The 2nd day - the sky, morning, and evening created (Genesis 1:6-8)
The 3rd day - dry land, seas, seed-bearing plants, vegetation, and fruit trees created (Genesis 1:9-13)
The 4th day - the Sun, Moon, and stars created (Genesis 1:14-19)
The 5thday - creatures that live in the sea and creatures that fly created and blessed (Genesis 1:20-23)
The 6th day - living creatures, livestock and wild animals, and 2 human spirits - made in the image of God - created (Genesis 1:24-31)
The 7th day - God finished his work of creation and rested, blessing the seventh day and making it holy. (Genesis 2:1-2)
NOTE: Genesis was written in Hebrew. If you want to study the direct translation, from Hebrew into English, then I recommend you go to

On the 6th day God says:
Geneses 1:26; Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness,
so that they may rule over
the fish in the sea
and the birds in the sky,
over the livestock and all the wild animals,
and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
God is suggesting that He create “male and female” in His image.
God and Jesus (who God was talking to - see below) were both Spirits =
the “male and female” creations are also spiritual
("in our image" Genesis 1:26 above).
Jesus today sits on the right hand side of God: Luke 22:69 "But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
Jesus is the "first of His works".
"Let us" is God and Jesus.
God is talking to Jesus when He says
"Let us make man in our Image".
God creates male and female spirits in His spiritual image (Genesis 1:27)

God tells His newly created male and female spirits about the world they are about to inherit - when they have bodies - and gives them instructions;
Genesis 1:28; God blessed them and said to them,
“Be fruitful and increase in number;
fill the earth and subdue it.
Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Genesis 1:30; And to every beast of the earth
and all the birds in the sky
and all the creatures that move along the ground, where there is life,
I have given every green plant for food.
And it was so.

In other words, it is not necessary for these 2 spirits (since they are going to "rule" when they have bodies) to be concerned/worried about what every living creature will have for food, including themselves.
God now rests on the 7th day. He has created everything necessary for the self-sustaining of life on earth. Plus He has created 2 spirits which will rule over the life He has created when they have human bodies.
Next, God puts in streams which "watered the whole surface of the ground."
Genesis 2:5-6; Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth
and no plant had yet sprung up,
for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,
6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
Mankind began here:
In Genesis 2:7 God creates a human body for the male spirit He has created.
NOTE: God creates a body for the female spirit later in Genesis 2:22.
It's a simple verse, but it is packed with meaning. It is actually in 3 parts.
God forms a body for the man spirit
(created in Genesis 1:27.
God creates a body for the female later in Genesis 2:22.)
from the dust of the ground
This body is not living.
The body becomes living (Step #2 below).
God breathes the "breath of life"
into the man's body
to make it living.
(Which he had done for all the other
creatures, animals and humans).
See Usage Note for Breath of Life.
NOTE: Usage of the term: "BREATH OF LIFE".
Geneses 7:22; Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died.
'Breath of life' refers to the physical bodies of creatures, animals, and humans.
It does not address the spiritual.
At the same time (as breathing the Breath of Life)
God puts His Image
(created with Jesus in Genesis 1:27)
into the now living body.
and the body becomes not only LIVING
but also a SOUL. (living soul)
NOTE: The living body now has God's Image within it.
NOTE: "living soul" in various translations is used interchangeably with "living being" and "living creature". The actual translation from Hebrew is 'soul'. Translation verification.
The addition of God's Image (Genesis 1:27)
would make mankind different and superior to animals, birds and creatures,
so he could rule over them,
because he was not only living with a genetic program, as they were,
but had God's Image inside him. (see Genesis 1:27, 1:28,1:29 and 1:30 above).
Just using pure logic, God would have to give this fleshly body + brain (with only a genetic program)
something to make it superior to genetic animals, birds, and creatures
in order for it to "rule" over them. (Genesis 1:28, 1:29, and 1:30 above).
SUMMARY: HOW DID THE HUMAN SPIRIT & BODIES COME ABOUT?
God created a male and female spirit (in His image).
God is a spirit, therefore any image of Himself would have to be spiritual.
God then created a body from the dust of the earth &
breathed into it the breath of life to make it living, (as He had done with all the various types of animals, birds, and creatures.)
God then simultaneously infused the now living body with 'His image' to make an intelligent, sentient, being
who could rule over the birds and over all the animals and creatures that moved on the earth.
How do we get our Image of God into each one of our bodies?
Can we all have an Image of God called the human spirit within us?
